Let’s Build a Clinic for Yanhuitlán !

“I want you to know that this is my GOLDEN DREAM.
What I most want is- to return to my home town of Yanhuitlán. There I want to establish a clinic for A PROMISE OF HEALTH.
It would be a small clinic that WILL REMAIN THERE FOR THOSE MOST IN NEED. It is what I want more than anything.”
Dr. Soledad Ramirez Medina
For 11 years Dr. Soledad has worked tirelessly treating patients at APOH’s rural health clinic in the town of Ayoquezco. The clinic is an old government health building constructed more than 60 years ago. Abandoned for many years, it was dusted off and refurbished in 2010 when we started our program. The municipal government owns the building, providing it to APOH in exchange for medical service for the community. |

Sadly, all of the repair work never was completed and now, after several nearby earthquakes, tropical storms and the wear and tear of time, the building has cracks in the walls, some windows are broken and the roof leaks. Though in bad repair, Dr. Soledad and her family (3 young children) live there and do all they can to keep it clean and functioning.
In spite of all that is wrong with the clinic building, a very dedicated Dr. Soledad has seen and prescribed homeopathic remedies to thousands of patients not only from Ayoquezco but from 24 surrounding villages! Even this year, with the Corona Virus and multiple lock-downs in villages, she has seen and treated more than 3,000 patients!
In her 11 years in Ayoquezco, Dr. Soledad has seen and treated more than 29,000 patients and from the surrounding villages, another 6,000!

All these years, it has always been Dr. Soledad's goal to someday return home to help her people.
Yanhuitlán, Oaxaca, is smaller than Ayoquezco. It only has a population of about 2,000. Surrounding it are many more small villages and ranch communities bringing the population in the region near 6,000.
The history of Yanhuitlán is rich. Once it was an ancient Mixtec capital rivaling the Aztecs. During the Spanish Conquest it became the site of a major Franciscan monastery which can be visited today.
But for all of this, Yanhuitlán does not have its own doctor and has not had one for a long time! There is no doctor anywhere close-by and one is sorely needed.

Now it’s time. Dr. Soledad has said it is time to return home. To make her point, she has purchased some land in the center of town. In the months to come she wants to build the clinic of her dreams. In her words,
"It will be my “Golden Dream. It will be a small clinic that will remain there for those most in need.”
