Dr. Soledad greets patients in Agua Blanca |

Exciting things are happening for the indigenous people of
Mexico. It all started in the small Yucatán
village
of Huhí.
From
2001 to 2009, A Promise of Health worked in more than 25 rural
municipalities in Yucatán, serving 158,000 people. The majority are Maya,
who live in extreme poverty. To meet this need, A Promise of Health
perfected its Medicine Wheel program. December 2009, A Promise of
Health turned its program over to
Yucatan’s Rotary Clubs. Today, we only operate in
rural Oaxaca.
The
medicine wheel was sacred to Native Americans living on the
Great Plains. To them the wheels were a place to go for
spiritual renewal and prayer. To the native people of Mexico, our
Medicine Wheels are an answer to their prayers to bring health to their
people.
In each Medicine Wheel is a cluster of villages and small
towns that can locally be served by one doctor. The doctor lives within the
circle, becoming part of the community. Living in a wheel are 20,000 to
40,000 people. A doctor rides circuit, going from village to village each
week, seeing patients and bringing medicine.
